Project overview

BACKGROUND

The NextEra Power Delivery Business Unit aimed to significantly reduce Capital/O&M costs by $28 million over the next five years. This was to be achieved by digitizing the existing manual, paper-based processes involved in fieldwork planning and scheduling.

GOAL

The project's objective was to merge eight different systems into a unified application for Resource Optimization Coordinators (ROCs) to efficiently schedule and plan work, thus streamlining operations.

TIMELINE

I was part of the team from September 2020 to March 2021. During this period, the project transitioned from developing a custom solution to adopting Salesforce as the platform.

Execution

IDEATION AND DESIGN

Upon joining, I leveraged existing stakeholder feedback compiled in Klaxoon to guide the design process, ensuring that we built upon previously identified needs rather than starting from scratch. I conducted interviews with ROCs to understand their current workflows and pain points. This insight revealed that the solution could draw elements from familiar tools such as Google Calendar and Asana.

I designed the initial ROC Planning Board tool featuring a calendar view as the primary interface, integrating functionality to manage and visualize schedules akin to these well-known applications.

CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT

For the MVP, we focused on integrating the most utilized features into a streamlined interface. This included creating, submitting, searching, and filtering work requests. The design also featured:

  • A calendar view for an overarching snapshot of all work requests.
  • A draft state to minimize errors before publishing.
  • Multi-crew assignment capabilities reflecting real field activities.
  • A crew week summary to aid foreman managers in overseeing weekly activities.

USER TESTING

Using UserZoom, I conducted quantitative, moderated usability testing which showed a success rate of over 90% for all tasks. The insights from these tests were used to refine the UI, addressing any issues before handover to the development team.

PROJECT SHIFT

In late March, the decision was made to shift from a custom-built application to a Salesforce-based solution due to strategic changes by the leadership. Consequently, our UX team was reassigned to other projects. This pivot highlighted the flexibility required in project management and the importance of adapting to evolving business strategies.
